Ludhiana, Punjab: The main accused in the Ludhiana fake encounter killings Gurjit was earlier a Congress loyalist. The police have found that Harmanpinder Singh, whom Gurjit used to call his nephew, is not his relative. Gurjit, a landlord who owns a lavish farmhouse at Balachaur, entered politics in 2008. He had contested the block samiti elections on a Congress ticket in 2008. Later, Gurjit joined the SAD. His wife, Rajwinder Kaur, had contested the sarpanch election on a SAD (Badal) ticket.

Batala/Gurdaspur, Punjab: Two decades after Gurdaspur resident Sukhpal Singh was eliminated by the Punjab Police in a fake encounter in 1994, his family says they will not give up their fight for justice. Sukhpal Singh’s widow Dalbir Kaur, his father Jagir Singh and son Jugraj Singh are living in penury. Fearing threat to their life, the family had to sell property at their ancestral village Kala Afgana (in Gurdaspur) and shift to Batala. However, the money was spent on a long legal battle and Dalbir Kaur’s illness.

Ludhiana, Punjab (Sept. 29): A detailed report by Mohit Khana, The Tribune journalist, says: [t]he cold-blooded gunning down of two young brothers, Harinder Singh and Jatinder Singh, allegedly by an Akali (Badal Dal) leader in connivance with a police party yesterday (Sept. 27) at Jamalpur near Ludhiana was reportedly a case of political rivalry. Hailing from Bhopur village near Machhiwara, the youths were active supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). They belonged to a poor Dalit family and were popular kabaddi players.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India (SCI), on Sept. 23, passed directions that each police encounter resulting in death should be thoroughly investigated by an investigative agency. The directions came in an order passed on a plea by the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). The SCI ruled that that there should be an investigation by an independent agency like the Crime Investigation Department in encounter cases.

The police had claimed that all were connected to 'terrorist activities' and were killed in an encounter. But now the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has concluded that Ishrat Jahan was not connected to any terrorist activities, and further that she was killed in a fake/staged encounter. CBI reportedly filed a charge-sheet in this matter on July 03, 2013.

Surjit Singh told media persons that he went on Punjab police training in 1989 and was deployed as a constable in 1990 after his training.

New Delhi, India(June 18, 2013): People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has shared a statement by the mother of Ishrat Jehan, a victim of fake encounter. It is notable that the Ishrat Jahan encounter took place on 15 June 2004, and involved encounter killings of four people on an empty road stretch between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat state, by the officers of Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch.
