Akal Takht Sahib, Sri Amritsar

Need to Create an Independent Panthic System for Akal Takht Sahib

Need to Create an Independent Panthic System for Akal Takht Sahib

Sri Amritsar: On the past 4th of July, a Panthic gathering was called by the SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) to implement the Adesh (edict) of Sri Akal Takht Sahib against Bhagwant Mann. Regarding this, the chief of Babbar Khalsa International, Bhai Wadhawa Singh, issued a written message urging the Khalsa Panth and Guru-Sangat to be ready for the restoration of the sovereignty of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, for maintaining the dignity and glory of the Khalsa Panth, and for creating an independent Panthic system according to the Guru-Aashay (the Guru’s vision/will).

Enemies Demolished the Building, Our Own Are Destroying the Principles

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Today, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has called a Panthic gathering to implement the Adesh of Sri Akal Takht Sahib against Bhagwant Mann. Anti-Panthic forces have been opposed to Sikhi principles and the sovereign Sri Akal Takht Sahib since the very beginning of Sikhi. Just as the Congress government previously launched direct and ideological attacks on Akal Takht Sahib, now the BJP and Kejriwal’s operative, Bhagwant Mann, are doing the same. The Khalsa Panth has always given a befitting reply to these attacks and will continue to do so.

But the real concern for the Sikh Panth is those people who wear the mask of Sikhi while sitting amongst Sikhs, occupying important and sacred Sikh institutions, and playing with Sikhi principles. These mainly include three factions: the current Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the SGPC, and the Akali Dal. In addition to these, there are Sikh personalities, Deredars (cult leaders), or organizations that support them to serve their own vested interests.

The fundamental duty of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib is to guard Sikhi principles and uphold the supremacy of the Guru Granth-Guru Panth. However, for some time now, the Jathedars appointed by the SGPC have undermined the Maryada (code of conduct) of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. This includes everyone from ‘Giani’ Gurbachan Singh to the current SGPC-appointed acting Jathedar, ‘Giani’ Kuldeep Singh Gargaj.

The tenure of ‘Giani’ Gurbachan Singh is a prime example before us. In 2007, Ram Rahim, who attempted to impersonate Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, was declared a Panth-dokhi (traitor to the Panth) from Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and a Hukamnama (royal edict) was issued for a complete boycott of his Dera. Later, without any formal apology and merely under the pressure of the Badals, the Dera chief was pardoned by ‘Giani’ Gurbachan Singh. What bigger mockery could there be while sitting at the Akal Takht?

The exact same thing happened during the tenure of ‘Giani’ Raghbir Singh. On December 2, 2024, the Panj Singh Sahiban (five beloved authorities) issued a Hukamnama declaring Sukhbir Badal and the then-Sikh ministers Tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct) for the sins committed against the Panth during the 2007-2017 Akali government. Prakash Singh Badal’s ‘Fakhr-e-Qaum’ title was revoked, all factions of the Akali Dal were dissolved with an order to resign within three days, and a seven-member committee was mandated to make new recruitments.

But the very next day, Akali leader Daljit Singh Cheema met the Jathedar and told the press, “We have explained our compulsions and taken more time, and we are not resigning yet.” The question must be asked: Can a lone Jathedar alter an Adesh issued by the Panj Singhs on his own level? If it had to be done, why was the Sangat kept in the dark? The Akali leadership neither resigned nor dissolved their structure; instead, they started recruiting through their own committee, and Jathedar Raghbir Singh welcomed that very recruitment. Jathedar Raghbir Singh himself violated the Hukamnama he had issued. Driven by attachment to his post after losing the Jathedari, he knocked on the doors of worldly courts to retain his job as the Head Granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib. When the entire Qaum (nation) was saying that ‘Giani’ Kuldeep Singh Gargaj was not a Jathedar chosen on principle but was forced upon them in the dark of the night, Raghbir Singh accepted him by offering him a Siropa (robe of honor).

Now, acting Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj has also taken no action against those mocking the December 2, 2024 decision. On the contrary, Jathedar Gargaj is dancing to the tunes of the Badals.

On the issue of the law against the Beadbi (sacrilege) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, it was the duty of the Jathedar to clearly announce that we do not need any government law for the protection of Sri Guru Granth Sahib—this responsibility rests on the head of the Khalsa Panth. But instead of doing this, the acting Jathedar is now demanding the government change certain clauses, implying that an amended law would be acceptable to Akal Takht Sahib. This unprincipled approach has given the worldly government direct permission to interfere in our religious affairs, shifting the responsibility for the Guru Sahib’s protection from the Khalsa Panth to the Punjab Government. We have made it clear before that we do not accept any law that makes Sri Guru Granth Sahib a part of any judicial or administrative proceedings.

The SGPC’s role in the destruction of these principles is no less. The current method of appointing a Jathedar is not in accordance with Sikhi principles, and the Sangat has long been demanding a concrete and universally accepted constitution (Vidhi-Vidhan). SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami asked for suggestions to draft this constitution some time ago, which were sent by organizations and intellectuals. But instead of acting on these suggestions, the committee threw them in the trash. In reality, the committee does not want to create a constitution because they want to keep the Jathedars as their salaried employees. To run the Jathedars according to their will under political influence, they want to keep the power of appointment and dismissal in their own hands.

Today, what is happening is that the orders of the Badal family reach Akal Takht Sahib through the SGPC, and the Jathedars are forced to implement them verbatim. What bigger sin could there be than reducing the status of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to a mere ’employee’?

The third faction is the Akali Dal, which calls itself the representative organization of the Sikhs but has formed a flesh-and-blood relationship with the Sanatani-minded BJP, blindly following its orders. They completely disregarded the December 2 orders and have been propagating to this day that the decision was not the Jathedars’, but rather that of Indian agencies or the BJP. What bigger insult to Akal Takht Sahib could there be? Regarding the sins admitted before the Sangat, they said, “We just admitted it casually there, we didn’t actually commit any sin.” They accepted the facade of being declared Tankhaiya, but by ignoring the orders to dissolve their structure and elect new leadership, Akali leaders are still clinging to their posts today. On the other hand, they are getting the acting Jathedar to issue decisions of their choosing that have nothing to do with Sikhi principles. Their only motive is to save their existence in votes, power, and Punjab politics. It is clear that today the Jathedar, the SGPC, and the Akali Dal are all walking contrary to Sikh principles. Along with this, there are certain personalities, organizations, and Deras who, for their personal gains or to secure a share in power, are abandoning Sikh principles and supporting them. All of these people are playing the role of modern-day Masands (corrupt agents) and committing treason against the Guru Panth.

We want to make it clear that if you are repeating the history of the Masands, then remember that the Guru Ka Khalsa will also repeat the history of the Tenth Father. The Khalsa Panth is not careless; it has a hawk’s eye on your deeds. Just as Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave exemplary punishment to the corrupt Masands by throwing them in boiling oil, when the time comes, the Khalsa Panth will do the exact same to the modern-day Masands.

We appeal to the organizations and Sangat gathered today to fiercely oppose the anti-Sikh principle forces and modern-day Masands. Be ready to restore the sovereignty of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, maintain the dignity and glory of the Khalsa Panth, and create our own independent Panthic system according to the Guru-Aashay.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Guru Panth Da Das,
Wadhawa Singh
Mukh Sewadar,
Babbar Khalsa International
