Chandigarh: An annual Gurmat Samagam was organised in memory of Panth Sewak personality Bhai Surinderpal Singh Tharua, who remained continuously engaged in carrying the traditions of the Guru Khalsa Panth and the inspiration of Sikh fighters to the younger generation during the later phase of the armed Sikh struggle initiated through the martyrdom of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindranwale.

On the occasion, the bhog of Sri Sehaj Path Sahib, initiated by the family, was performed. This was followed by Gurbani Kirtan by the Ragi Jatha of Bibi Simranjit Kaur of Lakhi Jangal Khalsa.

The samagam was held on October 2, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib, Urban Estate, Phase 3, Patiala, with the cooperation of Sikh Sangat and the family of Bhai Surinderpal Singh Tharua. During the gathering, his life, Panthic contribution and efforts to connect the younger generation with the traditions of the Guru Khalsa Panth were remembered.

It is noteworthy that Bhai Surinderpal Singh Tharua is known as one of the prominent individuals who worked to preserve the legacy of the armed Sikh movement. After his release from jail in 1995, he continued his work despite the atmosphere of fear created by the government. He helped look after the families of Shaheed Singhs and also released a list of Bandi Singhs who were lodged in different prisons.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhai Mandhir Singh of Panth Sewak Jatha Doaba shared his views on the qualities of Sikh leaders, their Panthic outlook, ideological steadfastness and the role they played during difficult times.

Ranjit Singh, while conducting the proceedings, spoke about the contribution made by Bhai Surinderpal Singh Tharua during the armed Sikh movement. He also informed the Sangat about the initiatives undertaken by Bhai Surinderpal Singh Tharua for the Chardi Kala of the Guru Khalsa Panth after his release from jail.
