Candlelight vigil outside UK Parliament on Human Rights Day calling for release of Sikh political prisoners

London, United Kingdom (December 11, 2013): Around 1,000 Sikhs from across the UK are expected today to hold a Candlelit Vigil in Old Palace Yard, opposite the Houses of Parliament from 2-6pm. Around 20-30 Members of Parliament are expected to join Sikhs during the vigil and show support for the release of Sikh political prisoners.

Amb Sahib/ Mohali, Punjab (December 11, 2013): As per information Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa has returned to the site of Bandi Singhs Rihai Morcha on the early morning of December 10, 2013. He was reportedly admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh by the Punjab police after getting his released from Ropar Jail.

A new U.S. Congress resolution introduced by Representative Joseph Pitts (R-PA) proposes making “calls for religious freedom and related human rights” a key concern in future dialogues with India and specifically commends the U.S. government’s decision, in 2005, to refuse a visitor’s visa to Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi because of his “connivance” in the 2002 Gujarat Genocide, marking the first time in American history a foreign politician has been refused entry to the U.S. for human rights violations.

Amritsar, Punjab (December 10, 2013): It is learnt that Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has said that the Government of India, particularly Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, should wake up to the plight of Sikh detainees languishing in various Indian jails for years despite having completed their sentence and to ensure that they are released forthwith.
