Why Is Prof. Bhullar Still in Jail? | Exclusive Interview on Sikh Political Prisoner’s Case

Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar’s case has been a long-standing topic of discussion among Sikhs in Punjab, India, and the global diaspora. A Sikh political prisoner, Prof. Bhullar has been imprisoned in India since 1995. Originally sentenced to capital punishment, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court of India after years behind bars. Prof. Bhullar is eligible for premature release, but the Delhi government’s Sentence Review Board has not approved his case. Recently, a bench of the Delhi High Court refused to extend his parole, citing that his petition for premature release is currently pending and expected to be heard in July 2025. During the tenure of the previous Delhi government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Prof. Bhullar’s request for early release was rejected seven times by the Sentence Review Board—even though the BJP-led Union Government of India had raised no objections. Now that the BJP is in power in Delhi, will the new government convene a Sentence Review Board meeting to consider granting Prof. Bhullar’s permanent release? What roles have the different governments, political parties, and the judiciary played in the cases of Sikh political prisoners—particularly in Prof. Bhullar’s case? To find answers to these pressing questions, journalist Mandeep Singh speaks with Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur of Panjaab Lawyers, legal counsel for Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar and several other Sikh political prisoners. Watch this exclusive interview and share it with others.
