Potato producers in Punjab are trapped in a major financial crisis. With production costs at ₹95,000 and income at merely ₹45,000, they are facing a direct loss of ₹50,000 per acre. Furthermore, companies backing out of contract farming agreements have dealt a double blow to the farmers. The silence of political leaders, even in an election year, has only deepened the distress.
