FATEHGARH SAHIB — Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University (SGGSWU) organized a special discussion and Ardas event, including the recitation of Sri Sukhmani Sahib, to advocate for the release of Sikh political prisoners (Bandi Singhs) who have been incarcerated in various Indian prisons for extended periods.
Conducted under the directives of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the event witnessed significant participation from the university’s staff and students.
Delivering the keynote address, Advocate Amardeep Singh Dharni, Member of the Fourth Centenary Sri Guru Granth Sahib Memorial Trust, expressed deep concern over the alleged discrimination faced by Sikhs at the judicial, legislative, and executive levels in India. He stated that fighting to protect Sikh principles and traditions is the fundamental right and duty of every Sikh.
Reflecting on the historical context, Advocate Dharni noted that following the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib, Sikh youth faced mass atrocities. He emphasized that the youth who took the path of armed struggle in response have been kept in prisons for periods far exceeding their designated sentences, bypassing standard legal procedures. He firmly termed this prolonged detention a direct violation of human rights and the Constitution of India.
Addressing the gathering, University Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Prit Pal Singh urged the Government of India to immediately release the Bandi Singhs. He also appealed to the young students in attendance to remain vigilant and fully aware of their rights and societal duties.
Among the prominent dignitaries present at the occasion were Dr. Sukhwinder Singh Billing, Dr. Sikander Singh, Dr. Hardev Singh, and Deputy Registrar Jagjit Singh.
