Brampton, Ontario: Sikh families, business owners, and Gurdwaras across Canada are grappling with an unprecedented surge in criminal extortion and what community leaders describe as Indian transnational repression. Reports of threats, intimidation, and violence have risen sharply in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area, leaving many community members fearful and frustrated by what they view as a lack of governmental acknowledgment of the problem.
According to Sikh advocacy groups, clear patterns indicate the involvement of networks linked to the Indian government, yet federal and provincial authorities have been slow to publicly address these concerns. Community organizations argue that this hesitation has contributed to a heightened sense of vulnerability for Sikh Canadians.
In response to the escalating crisis, a national coalition of Sikh organizations — including the World Sikh Organization of Canada, Sikh Federation Canada, BC Gurdwaras Council, and the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee — has announced a coordinated series of public townhalls across the country. The initiative aims to confront the growing threat, share critical information with the public, and press for concrete action from elected officials and law enforcement agencies. Members of Parliament, provincial legislators, municipal leaders, and police services have been formally invited to participate.

The first event in the series, titled “Community Townhall – Confronting the Threat: India-Linked Extortion & Sikh Community Safety,” will take place in Brampton on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gathering will be held at the Canadian Convention Centre.
Organizers say the townhall will provide a platform for community voices, outline documented patterns of extortion and interference, and highlight the urgent need for coordinated governmental intervention.
Following the Brampton townhall, additional events are scheduled in Calgary on December 13 and Surrey on December 14.
The coalition hopes the national series will not only raise awareness of the escalating threat but also catalyze policy responses that ensure the safety and security of Sikh communities across Canada.
