Sikh Coalition Secures Release of Wrongfully Detained Immigrants Amid Increased ICE Enforcement

UNITED STATES — The Sikh Coalition has announced significant victories in its ongoing Habeas Project, successfully securing the release of multiple Sikh immigrants wrongfully detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to a nationwide update released on September 2, the civil rights organization has been providing free legal representation to Sikh and Punjabi-speaking individuals who have been unlawfully arrested and held in U.S. immigration custody.

In June, the organization’s legal team secured the release of a Sikh truck driver who was detained by ICE solely because of his profession. His unlawful detention separated him from his wife and four-month-old child, nearly resulting in the family’s eviction from their home. More recently, the Coalition’s habeas representation ended the near 10-month detention of two Sikh brothers who were wrongfully taken into custody during a routine fingerprints appointment, allowing them to finally reunite with their families.

The Sikh Coalition warns that the number of Sikh immigrants placed in immigration detention is steadily rising every day, largely driven by increased enforcement activities specifically targeting truck drivers and asylum seekers. In response to this nationwide surge, the organization is urging the community to remain on high alert and has released a new community FAQ document regarding Habeas petitions in both English and Punjabi.

Advocates are encouraging anyone held in immigration custody in need of legal representation to contact the Sikh Coalition’s legal team. Depending on the specific circumstances, the Coalition may assist directly or refer cases to other legal service organizations that provide free or low-cost assistance, such as Ready to Stay, the National Immigration Project, and the Immigration Advocates Network.

However, the organization cautions that the recent extreme increase in immigration enforcement has stretched the capacity of many nonprofit groups, potentially leading to long waitlists. They advise that the best course of action is to reach out directly via call or email for a consultation, noting that direct conversations remain the most reliable way to accurately assess what help is available, as some organizations utilize translation services to handle multilingual cases not actively advertised online.

The Sikh Coalition maintains its core message to the community, urging individuals to practice their faith fearlessly while reminding the public to thoroughly vet and consult with multiple attorneys when seeking legal representation.
