FIFA World Cup 2026 Canada: Sikhs Permitted to Wear Kirpan at Toronto and Vancouver Venues

TORONTO / VANCOUVER — In a significant victory for religious freedom, the World Sikh Organization (WSO) of Canada has announced that Sikh spectators will be officially permitted to wear the kirpan at FIFA World Cup 2026 venues in Canada.

Following successful advocacy efforts led by the WSO, FIFA has confirmed that Canadian host cities—Toronto and Vancouver—will accommodate initiated Sikhs carrying the ceremonial article of faith at all FIFA-controlled stadiums and zones.

To balance stadium safety protocols with the protection of religious rights, FIFA has established clear conditions for carrying the kirpan during the highly anticipated 2026 matches. Under this new accommodation, an individual must wear the kirpan alongside the other four Sikh articles of faith (the Panj Kakkar). Furthermore, the kirpan blade must not exceed 10 cm in length and must remain securely fastened within its sheath at all times. Fans are also required to ensure the kirpan is securely attached to a fabric belt (gatra) and worn completely underneath their clothing throughout their visit. FIFA has officially advised stadium staff and security personnel in both Toronto and Vancouver of this updated policy to ensure a respectful and seamless entry process for Sikh football fans.

Collaborative Efforts and Continued Advocacy

The World Sikh Organization expressed deep gratitude to the members of the Sikh Caucus and various representatives across municipal, provincial, and federal government levels whose support was instrumental in securing this accommodation. “We thank FIFA, the host cities, and all those involved for their cooperation in reaching this positive outcome,” the WSO stated in its official release.

The organization also emphasized that its ongoing efforts to advocate for the rights and interests of Sikhs in Canada and around the globe are sustained by community support. The successful negotiation with FIFA reinforces the WSO’s broader mission to protect and promote universal human rights. This inclusive policy ensures that the 2026 FIFA World Cup—the largest in the tournament’s history—remains an accessible and welcoming global sporting event for the Sikh community in Canada.
