Anti-Sikh Hate Crimes Surge by 25% in 2025 Despite National Decrease, FBI Data Shows

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Newly released data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indicates a concerning 24.6% surge in anti-Sikh hate crimes in 2025, even as overall hate crimes across the United States saw a slight decline.

According to reports from the Times of India, the FBI’s annual hate crime report documented a 7% drop in total hate crimes nationwide—falling from 11,404 incidents in 2024 to 10,606 in 2025. However, independent analysis conducted by civil rights organizations, including Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC and the Sikh Coalition, reveals that anti-Sikh incidents notably rose from 142 in 2024 to 177 in 2025.

September 2025 Peak and Political Climate

The Sikh Coalition’s review of the data highlighted a specific spike in September 2025, during which 26 anti-Sikh hate crimes were recorded—averaging nearly one incident per day. As noted by the Times of India, this peak directly followed a high-profile roadway accident involving a Sikh truck driver, Harjinder Singh, in Florida.

Mannirmal Kaur, Senior Federal Policy Manager for the Sikh Coalition, expressed deep concern over the findings.

“While this hate crime data remains imprecise, we are deeply concerned about its implications,” Kaur stated. “Any increase in hate crimes is, of course, discouraging. But minority and immigrant populations have faced an even more openly hostile political and social climate since this data was collected.”

She further emphasized that Sikhs have been heavily targeted, pointing to discrimination against Sikh truck drivers and the fear-mongering surrounding Sikh articles of faith from high levels of government.

The Challenge of Systemic Underreporting

Advocacy groups warn that the FBI’s figures, while alarming, represent a significant undercount. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC points out that the federal data only reflects voluntarily submitted information. Thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country either fail to provide data or report zero hate crimes, leaving the true scope of bias-motivated violence dangerously incomplete.

Calls for Legislative and Community Action

In response to the escalating threats and incomplete federal data, civil rights advocates are urging immediate action at multiple levels:

  • Federal Legislation: The Sikh Coalition is advocating for the passage of the bipartisan and bicameral Improving Reporting to Prevent Hate Act, which aims to improve how local agencies report data to the FBI.

  • State-Level Advocacy: Organizations are encouraging citizens to research local hate crime statutes, which currently vary widely from state to state.

  • Local Engagement: Sangats (congregations) and gurdwarae (Sikh places of worship) are encouraged to actively engage with local law enforcement and district attorneys to ensure potential hate crimes are properly investigated and prosecuted.

With the upcoming 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks and the national elections slated for November—periods historically correlated with spikes in hate violence against minority communities—the Sikh Coalition is urging communities to remain vigilant, while continuing to practice their faith fearlessly.
