Akaal Federation’s president, Bhai Kanwar Singh Dhami, passed away a few days ago. He was among the select personalities who remained part of the Sikh struggle even before the Ghall-u+ghara of Jun3 1+98+4. He actively participated in the Sikh movement of the 1980s–90s and stood firmly with the struggle even after its downfall.
After his arrest in 1993, Bhai Kanwar Singh Dhami was kept in illegal custody by the Punjab police for more than 10 months, along with his wife and minor child. During this period, Punjab police chief KPS Gill and the police pressured him to agree to a staged surrender before the press.
After enduring months of suffering and torture, he agreed to participate in the staged surrender planned by the police. However, during the press conference, he exposed the police drama and even slapped KPS Gill in the presence of domestic and international media. The incident made major headlines nationally and internationally, forcing the police to formally show his arrest.
Bhai Kanwar Singh Dhami later faced trial in court cases. After his release, he dedicated his life to service through Guru Asra Trust (Mohali), caring for orphans and needy children.
In this interview, journalist Mandeep Singh speaks with Bhai Narien Singh Chaura, a close companion of Bhai Kanwar Singh Dhami, to understand his life journey, sacrifices, and commitment to the Sikh struggle.
