Sikh Federation (UK) Demands Government Action on Anti-Sikh Hate Following Guilty Plea in Walsall Assault Case

LONDON / WALSALL — The Sikh Federation (UK) has renewed its urgent calls for the UK government to formally recognize and act upon Anti-Sikh hate, following the guilty plea of John Ashby, who admitted to the rape of a young Sikh woman in Walsall. According to a written release, a copy of which is available with Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), the advocacy group is demanding that authorities finally address the systemic violence and discrimination facing the Sikh community.

The guilty plea relates to a harrowing incident that, alongside another attack in Oldbury late last year, sparked profound outrage and fear. The Sikh Federation (UK) has been spearheading a campaign to ensure such targeted violence is properly recorded, noting that systemic Anti-Sikh hate is too often miscategorized and lost within broader statistics of racially aggravated crimes.

Despite promises made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer while in Opposition, and ministers conceding last October that Anti-Sikh hate may be a significantly larger issue than currently documented, the organization notes that progress in subsequent meetings has been “painfully slow.”

Highlighting the long-standing nature of this discrimination, Dabinderjit Singh OBE, lead executive at the Sikh Federation (UK), stated: “This year is the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and the worldwide targeting of Sikhs because of their visible identity e.g. turbans. We have been waiting on successive UK governments to recognise and address Anti-Sikh hate.”

He added that the organization intends to use this momentum to hold the current administration accountable. “Today’s guilty plea will be used to encourage Ministers to honour Labour’s pledge,” Singh said.

Jas Singh, principal advisor to the Sikh Federation (UK), addressed the specifics of the Walsall case, expressing relief that the victim would not have to endure a prolonged legal process. “We welcome the guilty plea entered in court today, which spares the victim the ordeal of a prolonged trial and the trauma of reliving such a horrific experience,” he said.

However, he strongly condemned the attacker’s demeanor and the circumstances of the assault. “The lack of accountability shown by the defendant throughout this case has been deeply unacceptable,” Singh noted. “The court has heard disturbing evidence of the abusive language used during a violent attack carried out in the victim’s own home.”

The Sikh Federation (UK) concluded its statement by offering continued support to the victim and demanding strict judicial consequences.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victim and her family, and we hope this outcome brings some measure of justice, as a community we will continue to support and stand by her,” Singh stated. “Crimes driven by racial hatred and violence have no place in our society, and they must be met with firm and unequivocal consequences. We now expect the court to reflect the seriousness of this offence in its sentencing. We also call on the government and relevant authorities to do far more to tackle anti-Sikh hate and to better protect those at risk within our community.”
