WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 31, 2026) — With April designated as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month (SAAM) and the festival of Vaisakhi fast approaching, the Sikh Coalition has launched a nationwide initiative urging local sangats to secure Sikh awareness resolutions in their municipalities. According to a written release, a copy of which is available with Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), the civil rights organization aims to equip community members with the resources necessary to successfully engage city councils, state governments, and school districts.

The initiative seeks to foster greater civic engagement and community education. In the official statement, the Sikh Coalition emphasized that “advocating for a resolution (also sometimes called a proclamation) will increase understanding between Sikhs and our non-Sikh neighbors at the local level.” To streamline this advocacy, the organization has distributed a step-by-step guide and toolkit designed to help individuals formally ask their elected officials to honor and celebrate the Sikh community.
The provided toolkit outlines a straightforward, three-step process for securing a local SAAM resolution. First, community members are directed to identify and look up the contact information for their desired government official—ranging from a Governor to a local School Board. Second, advocates are encouraged to reach out directly to share local Sikh history and ask the office “to introduce a SAAM resolution to ensure that more community members are aware of the U.S.-based Sikh community and our history in and contributions to the United States.” Finally, the Coalition stresses the importance of persistent follow-ups with the requested offices to track the resolution’s status.
Beyond civic proclamations, the Sikh Coalition is heavily prioritizing classroom education ahead of Vaisakhi. The organization highlighted its suite of educational materials, including a specialized lesson plan based on Sikh Coalition Senior Fellow Simran Jeet Singh’s children’s book, A Vaisakhi to Remember. According to the release, this book is “a great tool for elementary-school aged students to learn about Punjabi terms, the role of community, and how traditions are formed and sustained, even when immigrating to a new home.”
Additionally, the organization is promoting its Sikh Celebrations Toolkit, which provides materials covering Vaisakhi, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab, and Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Gurpurab, complete with classroom activities and presentations.
The Sikh Coalition advises parents to share these educational resources with teachers well in advance of the April celebrations. Community members who have questions regarding educational outreach or resolution advocacy are encouraged to contact the Sikh Coalition directly through their official channels.
