American Sikh Council Demands Hate Crime Probe Into Sikh Truck Driver’s Stabbing

Wyoming, USA: The American Sikh Council (ASC) has issued a strong condemnation following the brutal stabbing of a Punjabi Sikh truck driver in Wyoming, calling for a transparent investigation into potential racial or religious motives. The advocacy group is raising alarm over the timing of the attack, which occurred just days after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published—and later retracted—a controversial social media campaign targeting a fictional South Asian truck driver named “Mr. Singh.”

The Wyoming Rest Stop Stabbing

According to the ASC, Gurvinder Singh, a Punjabi Sikh truck driver, was brutally attacked on September 13. Public law enforcement records confirm that a severe stabbing occurred early that Sunday morning inside a bathroom at the Bitter Creek Rest Area along Interstate 80 in Wyoming.

Investigators state that the victim was stabbed 17 times, suffering severe wounds to the neck and chest. A family stopped at the rest area heard screams, witnessed the suspect flee the bathroom, and followed the suspect’s semi-truck to photograph identifying information for investigators.

Shortly after, authorities arrested 45-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak. Bzdak, a white male, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder. While the investigation is ongoing, local authorities have stated that the official motive for the attack currently remains unknown.

The DHS “Mr. Singh” Controversy

The ASC highlighted that the attack took place just four days after a highly criticized DHS social media post. On September 9, the DHS released an AI-generated poster titled “Transformers: Age of Deportations” as part of an immigration-enforcement campaign. The graphic featured a DHS-branded Optimus Prime confronting a brown-skinned, bearded man wearing a head covering, labeled as “Mr. Singh”.

The poster included the text, “America for Americans. Get off our roads; you don’t know how to drive, Mr. Singh,” alongside the slogan “Self-deport or find out”. It also encouraged citizens to report undocumented immigrants on American roads.

The imagery and messaging sparked immediate, widespread outrage from Sikh, Hindu, and Indian-American organizations, who condemned the campaign as racist, un-American, and discriminatory. Advocacy groups emphasized that the surname “Singh” is extremely common among Sikh and Indian Americans, many of whom are patriotic, hardworking individuals comprising a substantial part of the U.S. trucking industry. Following the severe backlash and accusations of religious and racial profiling, the DHS removed the post.

Calls for Accountability and Investigation

While the ASC acknowledges that current evidence does not directly link the DHS post to the attack on Gurvinder Singh, the organization argues that the close proximity between the government messaging and the violent incident demands serious scrutiny.

“Sikh and South Asian Americans should not have to wonder whether official rhetoric portraying people who look like them as unwanted on American roads will contribute to increased hostility or harassment,” the ASC statement read.

The organization is calling on federal officials to recognize the real-world consequences of government messaging on vulnerable communities. They are demanding a full investigation into the Bitter Creek stabbing to determine if it constitutes a hate crime. The ASC reiterated its solidarity with Gurvinder Singh, his family, Sikh American truck drivers, and all communities confronting hatred and violence.
