Recently, Giani Raghbir Singh, Head Granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib and former SGPC-appointed Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, held a press conference in which he accused the SGPC of serious mismanagement and corruption. He appealed to the Khalsa Panth to convene a Sarbat Khalsa to deliberate on and address these concerns.
At a time when the appointment and authority of individuals holding key Panthic positions — including the Jathedars of the Takhts — are being questioned due to unilateral decisions taken by those controlling the SGPC, and in the absence of any widely recognized procedure, an important question arises: In the present circumstances, who holds the authority to call a Sarbat Khalsa?
Bhai Mandhir Singh of Panth Sewak Jatha Doaba has examined the Panthic traditions related to the institutions of Sarbat Khalsa and Gurmata. Last year, Panth Sewak Jatha Doaba released a detailed document proposing a structured process for convening a Sarbat Khalsa.
Journalist Mandeep Singh speaks with Bhai Mandhir Singh to explore this issue in depth.
