The decision in a case registered against Sucha Singh Langah and another ruling party (Shiromani Akali Dal – Badal) leader Amrik Singh Mohali was announced by a special Mohali court on February 11, nearly after 13 years of registration of FIR.

Special Judge Dilbagh Singh Johal also imposed a fine of Rs 1.1 crore on Langah and Rs 1.1 lakh on Amrik Singh. They were convicted under various Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and under Sections 467 (forgery of valuable security) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of the IPC.

Later in the evening, both Sucha Singh Langah and Amrik Singh deposited the fine in the court and were released on bail after furnishing bail bonds of Rs 5 lakh each.

It is notable that the court acquitted eight other accused in the case including Jasvir Singh, Pardeep Bhateja, Vinod Kumar, Bikramjit Singh, Subhash Chander Jain, Sampuran Singh, Sher Singh, Sudarshan Lal Kaura and Subash Chander (who died recently).

The prosecution had nearly 35 witnesses and many of them had turned hostile.

After the court’s verdict, Langah, who appeared in court today along with 300 supporters, did not speak to the media.

There were tight security arrangements in Mohali court and one SP, two DSPs and four SHOs had been deployed.

Meanwhile, Langah’s son Sukhjinder Singh Langah said they would challenge the decision in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The case dates back to 2002 when the state Vigilance Bureau had lodged an FIR against Langah and others for disproportionate assets. The FIR was lodged during the Congress government in 2002 led by Capt Amarinder Singh.
