Punjab is reeling under devastating floods triggered by heavy rains in the catchment areas of its rivers, particularly the Ravi and Beas. These floods have caused widespread disruption to the lives of people across the state. Families have been displaced, homes submerged, crops destroyed, and livelihoods severely affected.
On the ground, people express deep anguish over the recurring floods. Many believe that the disaster is not only a result of natural causes but also stems from mismanagement of dams, delayed decision-making, and inadequate preventive measures. There is a growing sentiment that governments and the administration have failed to act in time, worsening the crisis. Locals also point to a lack of long-term planning in river management and flood control.
This ground report has been prepared by the Sikh Siyasat team led by journalists Mandeep Singh and Gurpal Singh, with camerawork by Baljeet Singh. The report was edited by Jasvir Singh and supported with graphics by Preet Kalsi. We extend our gratitude to the residents of the Sultanpur Lodhi area in Kapurthala and to the Khalsa Aid team, who facilitated the recording of this report despite the difficult flood conditions.
