Canadian Sikhs Express Concerns Over Canada’s Move to Repair Ties with India without Accountability

Canadian Sikhs Express Concerns Over Canada’s Move to Repair Ties with India without Accountability

India and Canada have announced new High Commissioners to restore full diplomatic relations, which were disrupted for nearly a year. The appointments follow a meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in June 2025, where they agreed to take steps to normalize relations.

Dinesh K. Patnaik has been appointed as India’s new High Commissioner to Canada. Canada has appointed veteran diplomat Christopher Cooter as its new High Commissioner in New Delhi.
In a statement 26 August 2025, the Sikh Federation of Canada says the renewed relationship comes without any indication to the public that India has taken responsibility for its actions “after two years of open hostility and violence in Canada.”

“This is not diplomacy — it is impunity,” said spokesperson Moninder Singh.

“It undermines trust in Canadian institutions, suggests that commercial and geopolitical considerations outrank justice and risks entrenching the very networks that Canadian security agencies warn against.”
